Walnut is a deciduous, temperate-zone hardwood that is native to eastern North America. The primarily straight, medium-textured grain exhibits a natural luster and is a truly timeless material. Walnut also readily accepts glues, stains and finishes although few wish to tarnish the rich natural beauty with a stain.
Walnut has been a favorite for use in high-end furniture, gunstocks, musical instruments, cabinetry and flooring since colonial times. Walnut is one of the rarest reclaimed woods.
General Information for Reclaimed Wood Flooring & Cladding
Patina: Exposure to the elements and previous use in another structure through the decades has produced wood with unrivaled character and variety. The location of each board will determine the amount of weathering, fuming and aging present. Buyer should expect a large variety, further enhancing the overall patina and texture of the finished project.
- Skip-Planed: When the material has just a light pass taken so the entire surface is not planed smooth. It is generally done so you can see both the original weathering and saw marks while also revealing the figure in the wood. There may be sight variation in thickness that will need to be hand sanded on site after install.
- Smooth Top: The weathered patina is planed off, revealing the aged grain patterns from slow growth. Smooth top also tends to highlight original nail and bolt holes, as well as evidence of past insect activity and spalting. Aged wood exhibits many characteristics beneath the patina face that new wood has not had the time to develop. Smooth Top is a wonderful alternative to the rustic look.
- Original Aged Smooth Top: This material was originally planed smooth before being installed in it's previous application, but has endured years of wear, showing distinctive marks of previous use.
Reclaimed wood is a product with character. Such character can include checking, metal, holes, loose or missing knots, dimensional variations, wane, gouging, twisting, cupping, color and texture variations and other imperfections. This is the beauty of sourcing authentic reclaimed wood.
Our flooring goes through the highest level of sorting and milling, but is still very unique to newly harvested woods. It may require more time to install and result in needing to account for more overage than new wood. The end result however, is a stunning nature crafted and hand crafted piece of art.
The engineered construction options for our reclaimed wood flooring is 3/4" with a 5mm wear layer or 5/8" with a 3.5 mm wear layer. This surface layer is thick compared to industry standard and can be sanded and re-finished up to five times.
For either solid wood flooring or engineered wood flooring, we can provide a fixed width or mixed width floor. Due to the nature of reclaimed wood, the lengths will vary.
Additional milling available: For skip planed flooring, we recommend adding a micro-beveled edge. This will minimize (not eliminate) on-site sanding.
